Nautilus Spiral T-Shirt

RM 83.34

The nautilus has been building this shape for 500 million years. Each time it outgrows its home, it seals off the old chamber and moves into a slightly larger one, and every new chamber is a perfect scaled-up copy of the last.

The curve is a logarithmic spiral, r = a·e^(bθ): it grows without ever changing shape, crossing every line from its centre at the same angle. The mathematician Jacob Bernoulli loved it so much he called it spira mirabilis, the marvellous spiral, and asked for it on his gravestone. (The stonemason carved the wrong spiral.)

Here it is drawn with 34 chambers over five and a half turns, in crisp white lines on a dark shirt. A quiet piece of natural geometry for anyone who finds beauty in how things grow.
