Wave Interference T-Shirt

RM 83.34

Drop two pebbles into a still pond and their ripples overlap. Where crest meets crest the water rises higher; where crest meets trough, it falls still. This is interference, one of the defining behaviours of waves.

In 1801 Thomas Young used the same effect with light, shining it through two narrow slits, and showed that light travels as a wave. The bands you can see here, curving out between the two sources, trace the paths where the waves keep adding together or cancelling out.

Drawn as evenly spaced wavefronts from two sources, in white on a dark shirt. One of physics' most beautiful experiments, ready to wear.
