Truchet Tiles T-Shirt

$32.65 SGD

The Truchet Tiles T-shirt is a geometric maths design made from one simple tile and a coin toss. Each square holds two quarter-circle arcs, each joining the midpoints of two neighbouring edges. Turn every tile at random and the arcs still meet their neighbours smoothly, weaving into winding paths and little closed loops.

The idea goes back to Sébastien Truchet, a French priest and scientist, who in 1704 explored the patterns you can build from one square tile split corner to corner into two colours. In 1987 the metallurgist and historian of science Cyril Stanley Smith swapped the triangles for curves, and these flowing tiles have charmed mathematicians and designers ever since.

Order from randomness, in white lines on a dark Comfort Colors heavyweight tee. Toss the coins again and you'd get a whole new maze, yet every path would still join up.
